Bearing — Compass & Waypoint Navigation

Last updated: May 2, 2026

The Short Version: Bearing does not collect, store, or transmit any of your personal data. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking of any kind. Your location, waypoints, and settings stay on your device.

1. Information We Do Not Collect

Bearing does not collect any information from you. Specifically:

  • No personal information. Bearing does not require an account, email address, name, or any form of registration.
  • No usage analytics. We do not track how you use the app, which features you access, how often you open it, or how long you use it. There is no anonymized telemetry of any kind.
  • No location tracking. Your location is read by the app only to power the compass and waypoint features. It is never recorded by us, never transmitted off your device, and never associated with any identifier.
  • No advertising. Bearing contains no ads and integrates no advertising SDKs or trackers.
  • No device identifiers. We do not collect your device ID, advertising identifier, IP address, or any other fingerprinting information.
  • No crash reports. We do not use third-party crash-reporting services. No diagnostic data is sent from the app.

2. Data Stored on Your Device

Bearing stores the following data locally on your device, within the app's private sandbox. This data is only accessible to Bearing and is never transmitted anywhere.

  • Waypoints. Coordinates, names, and any notes you attach to the waypoints you create.
  • Settings. Your preferences such as units (degrees/mils, metric/imperial), display options, and calibration offsets.
  • Recent activity. Any session state Bearing keeps so the app can resume where you left off.

You can delete this data at any time by removing waypoints inside the app or by uninstalling Bearing from your device.

3. Network Connections

Bearing does not make network connections. The app does not contact our servers, third-party servers, analytics providers, or advertising networks. It functions fully offline.

Standard platform-level connections that your device may make independently of the app (such as system updates or Apple's own services) are outside the scope of this policy and not initiated by Bearing.

4. Device Permissions

Bearing requests the following permissions, used entirely on-device:

  • Location (While Using the App). Required to show your current position, calculate bearing and distance to your waypoints, and provide navigation guidance. Location data is processed in real time on your device and is never stored by us or transmitted off your device.
  • Motion & Orientation Sensors. Used to drive the compass heading display. Sensor data is processed on-device in real time and is not recorded or transmitted.

You can revoke these permissions at any time in your device's Settings. Note that revoking location permission will disable waypoint navigation, since the app cannot calculate bearings without knowing where you are.

5. Third-Party Services

Bearing does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, crash-reporting, or tracking SDKs. The app uses only the standard location and sensor APIs provided by your device's operating system.

6. Children's Privacy

Bearing does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. Because no data is collected, the app complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar regulations by design.

7. Data Deletion

Since all data is stored locally on your device, you control it completely:

  • You can delete individual waypoints from within the app.
  • You can reset all settings from the Settings screen.
  • You can delete all app data by uninstalling Bearing from your device.

There is no server-side data to request deletion of, because no data is ever sent to a server.

8. International Users

Bearing does not transfer any data across borders because it does not transfer any data at all. All processing and storage occurs on your local device, making it compliant with data-residency requirements by design. No provisions of the GDPR, UK GDPR, or other international data protection laws regarding data transfers apply, as there is no data collection or processing by the developer.

9. Changes to This Policy

If we update this privacy policy, we will post the revised version at this URL and update the “Last updated” date. Because Bearing does not collect contact information, we cannot notify you directly. We recommend reviewing this page periodically.

Any future version of Bearing that changes the app's data practices (such as introducing analytics, advertising, or cloud features) will clearly disclose those changes in the App Store release notes and in an updated version of this policy before they take effect.

10. Contact
